Los Alamitos
The suburban enclave of Los Alamitos has evolved from its humble beginnings as a sugar beet farming community to a thriving metropolitan center with nationally acclaimed public schools and an impressively low crime rate.
Los Alamitos is conveniently located only four miles from the Long Beach Airport, 19 miles from Orange County’s John Wayne International Airport and 22 miles from the Los Angeles International Airport, with fast access to the 605, 405 and 22 freeways.
This six square mile city is home to approximately 20,000 residents, including a large military population. Thousands of troops and civilians train and work at the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base (JFTB), an Armed Forces Reserve Center for units of the Army, Navy, National Guard and Marines. The JFTB also includes Los Angeles and Orange Counties’ only remaining military airfield and houses the Southern California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services.
Officials have made maintaining the city’s low crime rate a top priority. The Los Alamitos Police Department recently launched its “Los Al Watch†crime prevention email alert service. The groundbreaking safety “e-nitiative†promises to deliver timely information on citywide police activity, up-to-the-minute neighborhood crime alerts and fraud prevention information to participating residents’ email addresses.
The Los Alamitos Unified School District is known for its high student achievement and continual 100 percent graduation rate. The district offers six elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools. Several are National Blue Ribbon and California Distinguished School awarded facilities.
